At the September 2025 TAS AGM it was announced that Church Recorders are once again part of TAS.

We look forward to updated news from the Church Recorders.

Church Recording involves the preparation of a detailed written and photographic inventory of the fabric, furnishings and other contents of a church to form part of a national archive.  A few years ago, the Arts Society withdrew funding for church recording as part of its volunteering arm but the Mid Kent Society has decided to continue support to the recently formed Church Recording Society (churchrecordingsociety.org.uk) which has taken over responsibility for this interesting and valuable work.  The current group (all Arts Society members) comprises Liz Betts, Gill Cooke, Marion Cranmer, Gover James, Ani Martin, Derrick Parkes, Garry Pethurst, Patricia Rees and Bruce Rylands, Group Leader.

Over the last forty years, our Recorders have produced Records for nine churches locally: 

All Saints Ulcombe

St Peter and St Paul East Sutton and St John the Baptist Harrietsham both of which have among the finest fonts in the county. 

St Mary the Virgin Hunton 

St Nicholas Leeds with its 15thc eleven bay rood screen. 

St Peter's Boughton Monchelsea which has a real one-off: a millennium window with music and lighting designed by local artist Graham Clarke.

All Saints Hollingbourne

St Mary's Langley The completed Record was presented to the church in February 2023. 

William Pusey, the then vicar (1864-5), did not like the design of the building, so he simply had it pulled down and got famous architect William Butterfield to design him a new one.  It boasts an attractive east window, a 1599 bell cast by Thomas Hatch and a canopy of honour above the altar.  The accompanying extract and photographs from the Langley Record give a flavour of what we do. Go to Our Society then Documents.

St Nicholas's Church Otham, where we are currently working, is a grade 1 listed building. We have only just started, but hope to discover fresh treasures there.

We meet on the first and third Tuesday morning of each month, around 09:30 onwards. If you would like to visit and see us at work, you would be very welcome.
